Scoil Phádraig aims to encourage all pupils to participate in a range of sports for the purposes of enjoyment and recreation. At the same time, we enable those who wish to participate in inter-class, inter-school, local and county competitions to further these ambitions. P.E. is seen as a vital part of our curriculum here in Scoil Phádraig, and with the assistance of external coaches we offer a wide and varied Physical Education programme to all our pupils.

The children receive 1 hour of timetabled PE every week and specialist coaching is provided in the following:

Gaelic Football & Soccer

Boys and girls have the opportunity to partake in GAA sports and training including Gaelic Football, Hurling and Camogie. The parents association fund a GAA coaching programme and all classes take part in the Monaghan Schools’ GAA Coaching Programme.  The senior classes also take part in FAI soccer tournaments throughout the year with great success.

Competitions

Dance

Dance is an important aspect of the PE programme, with children being exposed to creative as well as folk dances. Many of the children enjoy learning Irish dances and groups of dancers represent the local GAA Club at the annual Junior Scór and in Fleadh Cheoil. The children also enjoy Zumba lessons from time to time.

All classes receive Line Dancing Lessons for a term under the instruction of Bernadette Byrne. The children always enjoy their steps and dance routines. We enjoyed partaking in the 10 at 10 challenge in 2017 where all staff and students line danced for 10 minutes at 10am. Thank you to Peter Byrne for recording the event via a drone.

Athletics

Scoil Phádraig compete in The Peace Link in Clones for the annual Track and Field event. Pupils from 1st to 6th class represent the school in individual races and relays.

Basketball

The senior pupils enjoy taking part in basketball lessons.  Hopefully they’ll carry their skills with them to secondary school, and be part of a successful team in the future.

Tennis

The children enjoy tennis lessons for one term every year. They sometimes have the opportunity to play a small tournament against neighbouring schools.

Sports Day

Our annual school sports day is a fun day for one and all. With our novelty races and competitive events all tastes are catered for on the day. We usually hold our annual ‘Sports Day’ during term 3.
